Chapter 13
First, to answer your questions:
Miss Eloise is just another woman who lives on the plantation. She is a friend of Miss Emma's and Tante Lou. They all go to church together.
When you are telling about what happened in the story, you will usually use past tense. However, when people are telling a story, they often will tell it in present tense, even though it took place in the past. eg. "In this chapter, Grant goes to visit Jefferson......" I would prefer you practice past tense, though.
What do you think about Grant lying to Miss Emma and Tante Lou? I think it is a kind, compassionate thing for him to do. This is one example where it is OK to lie.

LBD Chapter 12
You all did a good job this week on the reading. I hope it is getting easier for you.
I'm not sure you understood why Vivian can't go away with Grant. She is separated from her husband, but not yet divorced. She is very worried that her husband will hear that she is spending time with (sleeping with) Grant. If he does, he could argue that she is an unfit mother and take the kids away from her. That's why she and Grant have to sneak away to another town to be alone together.
